My-House in Melbourne

My-House is Austin Maynard’s own home. It is also the office of Austin Maynard Architects. Maynard and his family live upstairs, whilst AMA occupies the shopfront downstairs. The kitchen, dining and garden are shared between my family and the AMA team between 9am and 5pm.

My-House is an experiment that Austin Maynard lives in. It is a home that he dares not impose on my clients. It breaks many important rules, often not in a good way. My-House lets in sunlight where a house should not. Whilst it is a very sustainable home, My-House is not as thermally efficient as the homes I design for others. Issues of privacy and personal comfort are often challenged in My-House. It is for these reasons that Maynard and his family love it.

Audain Art Museum in Whistler

The Audain Art Museum designed by Patkau Architects is a 56,000 square foot museum located in Whistler, British Columbia. It will house Michael Audain’s personal art collection which traces a visual record of British Columbia from the late 18th century to the present day.

Pennsylvania Farmhouse in Lakewood

In the words of the architects Cutler Anderson Architects:

We were engaged to design a new four bedroom farmhouse on an existing 280 acre family farm in a remote area of northeastern Pennsylvania. The owners chose a piece of land in a meadow on the edge of a hedgerow. The building was designed with a low surface area to volume ratio in order to save costs and simultaneously reflect the simple white form of the practical farmhouse architecture of this region. The rolling sunshades and screens that enclose the building were designed to respond to solar gain through the large south-facing windows and also enable the building to be safely closed when the owners wanted more privacy.

Ten Broeck Cottage in Columbia

The brief was to develop a modern house within the existing frame and extend the house to provide additional accommodations, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, exercise room with steam room and sauna. No restrictions were placed on the design except to respect the form the original Dutch House. The design for the house by Messana O’Rorke developed organically; stripping back various additions and removing interior partitions from previous renovations revealed a classic house form, emulating a child’s perception of a house replete with four windows, a door, and sloped roof with a chimney on top.

It was impossible to determine what the original external appearance of the house was, so it was decided to respect it’s existing fenestration, which was probably initiated in the Nineteenth Century. The oldest surviving six over six sash window was removed and used as a template for the replacement of all the windows, which together with new wide board cedar siding and roof shingles gave the original cottage an eternal image consistent with its eighteenth century origins. The addition’s rectilinear form is separated from the house by a continuous glass gasket, windows are replaced by glass planes and the exterior walls are clad in CorTen steel, which will rust to a point where they complement the cedar siding of the house.
